An intimate reading/discussion, with wine! Helvetia Winery is one of my favorite places in the world (truly). It’s just a half hour from our house but feels a world away. My shoulders always drop back into place when Helvetia’s green rolling hills come into view. By the time I’ve passed the vineyards, lavender farm, and alpaca farm (!), I am happy and relaxed. And that’s pre-wine.

Setting can shape every aspect of a story: tone, character, and even plot. I’ll explore the many ways to bring your settings to life, and make “place” one of your story’s most powerful characters. The workshop will feature discussion, interactive exercises, and examples from narrative nonfiction and fiction, including Echoes of the Lost, my new novel deeply rooted in Portland, Oregon.
